I don’t want babies!!
Hi hi, if you’ve been here a while you know I don’t want babies, ever! No-when I get older I won’t change my mind. I’ll be 37 this year-I can’t even handle an 8 year old dog!! I have zero desire to be a mother to a human!!
So I wanted to talk about Ovulation and how I am not on hormonal birth control yet I have no babies. The biggest concern I hear from women that want to come off birth control but are worried-have concerns about pregnancy.
The reason hormonal birth control works-is because it stops ovulation. Ovulation happens once a month when your hormones trigger an ovary to release to release an egg for fertilization. If the egg isn’t fertilized then your uterus lining sheds..hence a period happens.
Pregnancy and ovulation-what does that even mean? Your egg only last 12-24 hours after it is released then it dissolves into your uterus lining. However sperm can live up to 5 days due to cervical mucus fluid. The best chance of getting pregnant is having sex 1-2 days prior to ovulation.
This all sounds complicated, I know but let me see if I can simplify it. I always encourage my clients to monitor their temp every morning. I do this because I want to make sure they are ovulating. Ovulation is important for pregnancy but when I say that I mean those hormones that are being suppressed by your birth control are actually important and serve a purpose. The reason I encourage them to monitor their temp is because when you ovulate your temp rises ever so slightly. You also will notice some cervical fluid changes/discharge. During ovulation your discharge should look like egg whites-yes that’s totally normal!!
Therefore, I know when I ovulate-I know when I’m fertile. You can use a method called Fertility Awareness Method to prevent pregnancy. Which is taking your temp every morning and monitoring your cervical discharge. I would recommend getting to know your cycle for three months before you start having sex without protection of any kind. You can also download an app and use that to assist you in determining when you are ovulating. I have used daysy in the past. I also love the app called Ovia. There is a fertility tracker that doesn’t require temp every morning called Ava however i have never used that myself.
Point of the story is you can get prego six days a cycle. Get to know your cycle, track your menstrual cycle, take your temperatures, pay attention to your cervical discharge.
Let me know if you have any questions-I’d love to help!
