What I did about my estrogen dominance
So I know at the beginning of the week I talked a little on insta about estrogen dominance and what that looks like for me. I thought I would just go into a little more detail for you guys. I’ll talk about the supplements I take and why. This is honestly my favorite thing I learned about my own hormones. I also love that I can 1000% tell when I don’t eat enough vegetables-veggies give me life.
As I said, estrogen dominance means either too much estrogen or not a good ratio of estrogen and progesterone.
Estrogen dominance can be caused because of a few things: the environment, what we’re exposed to, the products we use on our bodies, and the foods we eat, all plays a part in our hormones. We are exposed to so many chemicals these days that our bodies are working over time. We also are a society of people with high stress and high inflammation. These things take a toll on our bodies.
Really the first thing I had to work on was fixing my gut. Gut health really drives everything to function in our bodies. As a kid I was lactose intolerant so my mom would get me rice milk to drink. As an adult I don’t drink cows milk but I do love me any other type of dairy product! I did, through trial and error, find out my body does not love dairy. My skin hates it, I break out so bad. So I stopped the dairy (sometime I will have dairy-I mean who can 100% give up ice cream) and realized it was mostly from the whey protein I was drinking. So stopped the whey protein and switched to collagen or egg white protein.
I just recently started noticing and paying attention to how I feel when I eat certain foods. Like I said, veggies are my friends. Fiber is also so important and I don’t think we as women are eating enough (fiber helps you get rid of that excess estrogen). I don’t think we as women are eating enough food to begin with! My mom jokes about me having a tape worm because it’s not my brothers that eat her out of house and home-it me! I also cut down on sugar. I know I know but all in moderation!
What else did I do to lower my estrogen? I started paying attention to my sleeping habits. Sleep is important to me, I love sleep, I love my bed, I love sleeping alone in my bed. I also love my boyfriend to the moon and back but I tell ya-I cannot get quality sleep next to another human, it’s impossible. He also snores, so there’s that situation (love you babe). I challenge you to pay attention to how much sleep and the quality of sleep you’re getting.
I also worked on controlling my stress levels. How, you ask?? I’m a pretty reactive person or let’s say I used to be (I’m working on it). About 10 months ago I started on this journey of growth. I really was tired of being angry all the time about literally everything. I was miserable. So I took a course on meditation-best freaking investment of my life!! Omg. That course changed my mindset in a big way. I learned what I put my energy into matters. I no longer got angry about things I couldn’t control. I reacted differently to situations. I felt better!! I learned how to meditate. I learned how to journal. I learned how important healing is. I highly encourage mindset, meditation, and journaling work! If you need some recommendations on where to start just let me know, I can give you some pointers and send you to someone that can help.
I also workout-that never changed. I am just a little more consistent now. I get to the gym four days a week, I work on mobility and strength.

Another thing I did, on a serious note was cut down on the alcohol. Don’t get me wrong I still have wine when I want but I’m just more intentional about it. I figured my liver needed a little more support.
Ok let’s talk about the supplements I started taking.
For my estrogen dominance I started taking DIM (diindolymethane) detox, this helps move my estrogen to the correct pathway, essentially enhances estrogen metabolism (DIM is also found in veggies like broccoli, Brussels, and cabbage). So eat those veggies.
Vitmain B complex (we all should be taking this!)- energy and heavy periods. Also this will turn your urine the color of a highlighter so just be mindful of that. Our body absorbs what we need then excretes the rest in our urine.
Magnesium- I take this at night (this will help with sleep, bowel issues and painful periods)
Tumeric- to help decrease inflammation
Vitmain D- also important for everyone to take one of these. Studies have shown higher levels of Vitamin D have lowered estradiol and progesterone.
If you’re going to take supplements you should be taking good/ high quality vitamins. You also shouldn’t assume you’re getting these vitamins in proper dosages if you think taking a multivitamin counts.
There also might be other reasons for estrogen dominance such as thyroid issues, Vitmain D levels, insulin levels, adrenal testing...so many things. We will eventually hit all these topics but wanted to throw them out there now as an FYI.
Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help with anything!
